Stop Suffering From Chronic Jaw Pain and Headaches

Waking up every morning with a headache shouldn’t be normal. Neither should avoiding certain foods because your jaw hurts too much to chew them. If you’re dealing with TMJ disorder (temporomandibular joint dysfunction), you already know how it affects everything – your sleep, your meals, your work, even your mood. At Verde Smiles in Camp Verde, Dr. Timpanaro specializes in diagnosing and treating the underlying causes of TMJ pain, rather than masking symptoms with pain medication. Whether your jaw clicks when you open your mouth, you wake up with facial pain, or you’ve been battling “migraines” that no one can seem to fix, we help Camp Verde patients find lasting relief through personalized, conservative treatment approaches.

Why TMJ Treatment Improves Your Quality of Life

TMJ treatment eliminates chronic pain while restoring normal jaw function, which means you can eat, speak, and live without constant discomfort. By addressing the underlying causes of TMJ disorder, Dr. Timpanaro relieves muscle tension, reduces inflammation, and prevents further damage to your temporomandibular joint. Common Questions We Hear

Dr. Timpanaro can diagnose TMJ disorder during your examination, but common TMJ symptoms include:

Jaw Pain and Tenderness: Persistent pain in the jaw joint area, especially when chewing, talking, or opening your mouth wide.

TMJ Headaches: Frequent tension headaches or migraines that originate from jaw muscle tension and joint stress.

Jaw Clicking or Popping: Audible sounds when opening or closing your mouth, sometimes accompanied by a catching sensation.

Limited Jaw Movement: Difficulty opening your mouth fully or experiencing lockjaw where the jaw gets stuck in an open or closed position.

Facial Pain: Discomfort in the cheeks, temples, or around the ears that radiates from the temporomandibular joint.

Ear Pain and Ringing: Pain near the ear canal, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or feeling of fullness in the ears without infection.

Teeth Grinding: Bruxism (grinding or clenching teeth), especially at night, which worsens TMJ symptoms.

Bite Changes: Feeling like your teeth don't fit together properly or experiencing an uncomfortable bite alignment.

Dr. Timpanaro performs a thorough examination of your jaw joint, evaluates your bite alignment, and assesses muscle tenderness. He may review your dental history, discuss your symptoms in detail, and check for signs of teeth grinding. In some cases, imaging studies may be recommended to get a complete picture of your TMJ condition.

That clicking or popping sound when you open your mouth is one of the most common TMJ symptoms - and one of the most misunderstood. Let me explain what's actually happening in your jaw joint.

Inside your temporomandibular joint, there's a small disc made of cartilage that acts like a cushion between the bones. Think of it like a shock absorber that helps your jaw move smoothly. When everything is working correctly, this disc stays in place and your jaw opens and closes silently.

What Causes The Click: That clicking sound usually means the disc has slipped out of its proper position (what we call "disc displacement"). When you open your mouth, the disc pops back into place - that's the click you hear. When you close your mouth, it slips out again - another click. Some people only hear the click when opening, others hear it both directions.

Is It Serious?: Here's the tricky part - clicking alone, without pain, isn't necessarily a problem requiring treatment. Lots of people have clicking jaws their entire lives without it causing issues. But clicking combined with pain, limited opening, or locking is a different story. That suggests the disc displacement is causing joint damage or muscle strain.

When To Worry: Call Verde Smiles in Camp Verde if your jaw clicking is:

  • Accompanied by pain
  • Getting progressively worse
  • Making your jaw feel like it's catching or sticking
  • Limiting how wide you can open your mouth
  • Suddenly becomes frequent when it wasn't before
